When Wagner set about writing a new commission for the Ciompi String Quartet; her initial thoughts were of 'dignity and gravitas.' In the course of the composition; however; the music became 'whimsical and nostalgic;' reminding her of nothing more than her mother's childhood home in Tioga County (PA).
