Descripción de la:
Mendelssohn's String Quartet op. 80 is one of his few 'autobiographical' works, a moving musical document of his grief over the death of his sister Fanny and his attempt to artistically process the pain of this loss. Ignaz Moscheles wrote about it in his diary: 'The passionate character of the whole seems to me to be in harmony with his deeply shaken state of soul...'. The only relevant source, Mendelssohn's autograph, contains numerous corrections, deletions, and insertions. Some special readings in the copy probably go back to the arrangement for the premiere and are recorded in footnotes.
