A Mexican Serenade Although Joplin uses the same musical form in 'Solace' that is so familiar in his rags, ' Solace' is not a rag but rather a slow drag, which differs in tempo and mood. Even in the faster rags Joplin warns the performer against playing too fast; this is all the more important in a slow-drag. The recommended tempo here is eight note = 92 which should be slow enough to allow the tenderness found in 'Solace' to be expressed. P. K.
