Woodlands Variations by Sebastian Fagerlund is a 12-minute work for bassoon and string quartet. The piece is based on Woodlands for solo bassoon. The work consists of seven variations and a coda. In the middle, a static sound world emerges in which the bassoon's solo melody floats above a quiet string background. After the slow section, a faster, rhythmic and more energetic musical language returns and gradually the musical action moves back to the origin of the piece. Woodlands Variations was premiered by Bram van Sambeek (bassoon) and the Signum Quartet at the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam on 1 February 2020. The score and parts of the work (EP 14459) are available for sale as part of the Peters Contemporary Chamber Series.
