Johann Pachelbel, born in Nuremberg a generation before Bach, in 1653, is one of the most important organ composers in southern Germany after the Reformation. His compositions were already widespread at that time. The most popular work today is probably the Canon followed by the Gigue in D major. The canon - according to the source 'a 3 Violinis con Basso c.' - builds up over an ostinato bass whose two-bar figure is repeated a total of 28 times. The short gigue that follows is also strictly contrapuntal. The date of the work's composition is unknown. Like most of the other chamber music works, Pachelbel may have composed it during his time in Thuringia, 1677-1695. A popular work with a beautiful sound even for amateur ensembles.
