Joseph Küffner was born into a family of musicians in Würzburg. He learned to play several instruments, including violin, flute, trombone, guitar and also clarinet. Initially, Küffner was a military musician in the chapel of the Elector of Würzburg, changing to the court chapel during the secularization (1806-1814) and later returning to the military music of the Bavarian army. From 1825 Küffner lived in Würzburg as a teacher, composer and arranger. As a composer, he wrote symphonies, overtures, military music, and chamber music for winds and strings with piano or guitar accompaniment. Schott also published an instruction for clarinet playing by him: 'Principes Èlémentaires de la Musique et Gamme de Clarinette suvis de 24 Duos instructifs (...) pour deux Clarinettes, op. 200'. The Potpourri sur un thème suisse on an Alpine song from Switzerland appeared in print in 1838 (plate number 2590). An old yodel melody serves as the theme. A melodic introduction is followed by a theme and five variations. In the concluding rondo, the triadic motives of the opening are taken up again.
