In addition to demanding concert pieces, Ernesto Köhler (1849-1907) wrote above all methodical literature and playing music in the Romantic style, reminiscent of the small forms of Chopin, Schumann or Brahms, which to this day are an integral part of flute lessons, student concerts and the ''Jugend musiziert'' competition. The ''Valse Espagnole'' op. 57, an expressive character piece for lessons and concerts, also falls into this category.
