The 'Fireworks Music' (HWV 351) by George Frideric Handel was premiered on April 27, 1749 at a fireworks display which the British King George II had arranged in London's Green Park. Besides the 'Water Music', the 'Fireworks Music' is Handel's second great 'outdoor music'. The first performance was given by the musicians on boats on the River Thames, and a dress rehearsal had already taken place shortly before in front of 12,000 enthusiastic listeners. The king had expressly ordered the work as an 'overture for military instruments'. The orchestra therefore consisted of 112 musicians (16 oboes, 15 bassoons, 20 horns, 40 trumpets, 1 contrabassoon, 8 pairs of kettledrums and 12 drums). The overture to the 'Fireworks Music' was arranged by Alfred Bösendorfer especially for the youth orchestra series 'eXplora'. This arrangement thus enables even beginners to perform this magnificent music by Handel and thereby also to establish a very practical relationship to music history.
