Wingin' It! is an entertaining concert piece. It makes especially high demands on the rhythmic qualities of the band and requires exact articulation and phrasing according to the composer's instructions. After a brilliant opening, a catchy theme crystallizes while all sections take turns to come to the forefront. Based on this theme, a swing in the classic big band style, a peaceful Bossa (in which the woodwinds dominate) and a section with typical rock and funk rhythms follow. The two-step feeling closes the circle to lead to the grand finale. This composition features all the essential elements of a contest piece and provides a particular challenge in the understanding and execution of popular styles. It also offers all the facets that make a work attractive for the audience as well as the musicians.
