As dawn breaks on a cold winter's morning, the citizens of medieval London wake up to find that the River Thames has frozen over. At first, one or two people venture out onto the ice, and then crowds begin to gather as stalls are set up for a Frost Fair. The day is passed in various exhilarating pursuits such as skating, dancing, drinking, ox-roasting and bear-baiting, in the midst of which the opening theme can be heard as a low solemn chant, as a reminder of the fragility of life and of the danger lurking just beneath the ice. After a good day's enjoyment, the crowds begin to disperse as the booths are packed away and the chill of evening begins to be felt. Finally, as dusk closes in, a few figures can still be seen wandering across the ice in the fading light.
Duration: 8 minutes
A PACK comprises one full score, string parts 4/4/3/4/2 and any wind, brass and percussion parts.
