The alternating judgments - 'worthless, completely unplayable' (according to Nikolai Rubinstein, to whom Tchaikovsky had actually intended his B-flat minor concerto) and 'magnificent' or 'ravishing' (according to Hans von Bülow, who then premiered the work and to whom it is dedicated) - expresses the tension.
