The alternating judgments - 'worthless, completely unplayable' (according to Nikolai Rubinstein, to whom Tchaikovsky had actually intended his B-flat minor concerto) and 'magnificent' or 'ravishing' (according to Hans von Bülow, who then premiered the work and to whom it is dedicated) - expresses the tension. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 is one of the most effective and popular of all concerto literature - and at the same time a work composed against convention. The fact that Tchaikovsky was controversial abroad, especially in Germany, was considered a Russian neo-toner and sometimes had to endure accusations of musical nihilism or primitivism, may be surprising today, but a glance at the score of the piano concerto is enough to discover astonishing things
