The Petersburg Sleigh Ride written by Richard Eilenberg (1848-1927) in the late 19th century is one of the most popular orchestral works our 'wintery literature' has to offer. I have been using the piano edition for four hands with my pupils for many years now because it can really add to the entertainment value of Christmas concerts. This edition published by Musikverlag Andrea Wiegand treads new paths in that it quite specifically indicates the instruments in the score and the individual parts and at the same time it follows the structure of a 'normal' score, the only exception being the (usual for this publisher) position of the trumpets above the horns. To replace missing instruments, there are also the customary transpositions of the original parts in the separate parts. I recommend that the minimum ensemble forces be a full string orchestra (an easy part for the violin means that really all beginners can join in the fun too), 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 1 trumpet, 1 trombone and a piano. The best soundscape can be achieved if you use all the score's original instruments. If you double the wind parts (e.g. several trombones or horns), then I would recommend specifying the solo passages and where the other instruments come in. If you need to use substitute instruments, then please try to make sure they have the right tonal colour - a trombone replaces the horn better than a saxophone. The score is in C while the individual parts are in the key of the particular instrument.

(Flute 1/2, Oboe, Clarinet 1/2 in Bb, Clarinet 1/2 in A, Bassoon, Trumpet 1/2 in Bb, Horn in F, Horn in C, Trombone/Tuba, Piano, Timpani/Triangel, Violin I/II, Violin easy, Viola, Cello, Double Bass)
