Jean Sibelius became internationally known with the 2nd Symphony. His symphony, which is also the most frequently performed today, is at the beginning of the orchestral works within the Sibelius Complete Edition. Kari Kilpeläinen, author of the comprehensive source catalog 'The Music Manuscripts of Jean Sibelius in the Helsinki University Library' (BV 270), cites in his introduction hitherto unknown correspondence both on the composition of the 2nd Symphony and on the first performances, which triggered controversial aesthetic reactions in Finland.
