Orchestration: 2 Flutes (2nd doubling Piccolo), 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets in Bb (2nd doubling Bass Clarinet [opt.]), 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets in C, 2 Trombones, Percussion (2 Players: Tam-tam, Suspended Cymbal, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Glockenspiel, Wood Block, Whip, Tenor Drum), Strings (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass)
This Suite is based on music originally for the film A Great Day for Bonzo, an H.E.Bates story adapted for Granada TV, directed by Michael Apted and shown on 12 May 1974. The score was written for clavichord and the first performance of the Suite was given by the composer at the British Music Information Centre, London, on 23 October 1986. The first recording of the Suite was made for BBC Radio 3 on 16 March 1989 and that performance is included in the CD called Blue Clavichord, released by Heritage in 2013. The orchestral version was recorded by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Clark Rundell on 7/8 September 2015 and released on Heritage the following year. The single strung Hugh Gough clavichord was well adapted to produce blue notes and that aspect is a feature of this new orchestral arrangement - a reminder that Dickinson has written, performed and recorded rags and blues which appear in various works.
The movements are Blues, Jig, March, Dirge, Waltz, Blues.
A PACK includes a full score, string parts 4/4/3/4/2 and all wind, brass and percussion parts.
Duration 14 minutes
