Alessandro Ponti’s In Fuga da Verona for solo harpsichord is thriller in music, set in medieval Italy. The underlying story of the piece is like a ‘spin-off’ of Shakespeare’s tragedy. One could imagine the lives of a couple of young friends from opposing families suddenly changing because one of them has killed a rival and has to flee immediately from the town: the emotion and suspense before the tragedy, the anxiety and drama of the murder, the action of the escape and the release of all the tension, yet tinged with sadness and tenderness, after parting.
