Gustave Sandré, born in Paris in 1843, studied music in his home town, first taught there and then went to teach at the Conservatoire de Nancy, which he later directed. Among his best-known pupils were Florent Schmitt and Eric Satie. As a composer, Sandré left behind mainly smaller works, often as sheet music supplements in entertainment papers. His present 100 Pièces are his most extensive published work, which is quite comparable in scope and execution to César Franck's standard work 'L'Organiste'. It is a collection composed and conceived especially for harmonium, but with the organ in mind. It contains short and medium pieces for different masses, always easy to perform. The collection can certainly be compared to César Franck's standard work 'L'organiste' both in scope and character. The work contains ten masses and 50 pieces, which appear in two parts.
