Descripción de la:
The three movements in David Rakowski's lively piano suite Penalty Box are each named for illegal maneuvers in American sports. The first, "Encroachment" - in which the line played by the left hand sneaks across the line played by the right - invokes the penalty called against players who cross the line of scrimmage in gridiron football. "Illegal Use of Hands," American football's name for excessively prolonged manual contact with another player's head, exploits extensive finger-pedaling to sustain long pitches. In basketball, "Double Dribble" is the violation committed when a player bounces a basketball with both hands; here, the pianist performs a repeated 16th-note tattoo on a single key with left and right hands in rapid succession. Penalty Box is dedicated to Holly Roadfeldt, who gave the world premiere in 2021 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.
