Shortly after Beethoven's death, it was not yet foreseeable what wealth of biographical writing would later come into circulation about him. Over almost ten years, Klaus Martin Kopitz collected the numerous records of Beethoven's contemporaries, some of which were published separately over two centuries, and presents them to the reader according to modern standards in terms of textual accuracy and scholarly commentary. Prominent contemporary witnesses such as Bettina v. Arnim, Muzio Clementi, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Franz Grillparzer, Nikolaus Lenau, Franz Liszt and Ludwig Tieck appear. In addition, virtually unknown and hitherto remote sources are represented alongside widely known ones. In this way, Beethoven's entire life span is comprehensively reflected. The double volume is rounded off by a source chronology as well as registers of source locations, works and work plans as well as personal names. In its scope, the edition reaches far beyond earlier ones of this kind. And even pronounced Beethoven connoisseurs will find many surprising things here.
