Since the 1980s, Reger research has developed a picture of the diversity, and complexity of Reger's work and discovered the composer as the first dropout from the supposed conclusiveness of music historical development. In musical life, however, clichéd ideas based on a small canon of works predominate. This is now to change. Since the beginning of the new millennium, a catalog of Max Reger's works and their sources has been compiled at the Max Reger Institute in Karlsruhe with the support of the German Research Foundation. This catalog is a worthy continuation of the series of catalogs of works by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin and Schumann. In it, profound knowledge of all original works and arrangements, whether printed or unprinted, completed or fragmentary, is conveyed in a readable form. History of origin, location and nature of the handwritten and printed sources are presented with many new research results so comprehensively that not only scholars, but also performers, music lovers and organizers can find an access to the today neglected and in many facets surprising oeuvre.
The Reger-Werkverzeichnis is broken down by numerous indexes simply and understandably and has all the prerequisites to quickly become the authoritative reference work in the matter of Max Reger.
