Josef Poncar, like his important contemporaries Jaromír Vejvoda and Karel Vacek, ranks among the 'great' composers of Bohemian light music. He always remained true to his rural atmosphere and theme. One of his most famous works is the polka 'In the Bird's Meadow'. Despite his fondness for music, Josef Poncar was employed by the railroad in his main job. Many of the beautiful polka and waltz melodies by Josef Poncar (1902-1986) are almost folk songs in Bohemia and are as well known and loved as traditional folk songs are here.
