Franz Schubert composed the two movements of the 'Unfinished' in October 1822 and, with the torso, puzzled posterity, which only became aware of the existence of this masterpiece simultaneously in 1865 through the first edition and premiere. There was apparently no external occasion for its creation. Did Schubert really only regard the work as an experiment that did not allow for a continuation? After all, the Scherzo is still outlined up to the beginning of the Trio, and nine measures of this movement are even completely orchestrated ...
